Setting: North side parking lot entrance of the Shi-Hu Rest Area of the
Second Highway
Dimensions(cm): 12 x 6.5 x 9 m
Medium: Steel
Year: 2003
Maintenance: Taiwan Area National Freeway Bureau
In the form of large arcs made of steel wire, Concentric combines the linear,
intersecting, looping and integrating properties of highway junctions to
symbolize the new era’s high speed and streamline. It also adapts the
shapes of the 3 legendary animals in Chinese folktale: dragon, phoenix and
Chilin (Chinese unicorn). The intertwining bodies of the animals are

Work: Garden
Artist: Jun T. Lai
Setting: North side parking lot entrance of the Shi-Hu Rest Area of the
Second Highway
Dimensions(cm): 75 x 4 m
Medium: Plexiglass, Stainless Steel
Year: 2003
Maintenance: Taiwan Area National Freeway Bureau
Flowers and fruits, the characteristics of the Taiwanese post-modern
agriculture and the abstract elements of nature, such as sky, cloud and
sun, brought together lights and colors to run across the connecting bridge.
Accompanied by the sound effect of bird chirping from the local mountains,
this bridge that connects the north and south sides of the service area is
transformed into a space full of dynamic natural beauty and vitality.

This 5-piece stone sculpture serves both aesthetical and functional (as
tables and chairs) purposes. Stemming from the theme of post-modern
agriculture along the mountain railway, together with the natural elements of
flowers and fruits found in the connecting bridge, “forest” shows where the
ground in the woods are covered by fallen flowers and fruits. This piece that
develops along the ground blends men and nature well into the green
scenery of the mountain railway.
